Privacy policy for Rimdal

The full text below, word for word, in the same wording as inside the app.

This English text is provided for information. The Swedish version of this policy is the binding one, and it governs if the two ever disagree.

Last updated: 2026-10-10

This text describes what the app actually does. It is written against a reading of the code, and every statement below can be checked in it — not against a template.

Short version

  • The app has no server and no account. Everything the app saves stays on the phone.
  • No advertising, no tracking, no analytics, no third-party tools.
  • When the child reads aloud, the audio may be sent to Apple to be turned into text. We save neither the audio nor the text.
  • The child can read without the microphone. With it switched off, the app sends nothing anywhere.

1. Who the data controller is

Amir Azarniya Staaf, a private individual. Contact: contact@rimdal.com

Rimdal is published by one person, not by a company. That person decides what the app saves and why, and is therefore the data controller under the General Data Protection Regulation.

2. What the app saves on the phone

Everything in this table sits in the app's own storage on the phone. None of it is sent anywhere by us.

WhatWhy
The parent's name, as written during setupSo the app can greet you by name when setup is finished
The child's name, age and chosen avatarSo the app knows who is reading and can pick stories at the right level
The child's reading language and the interests chosen when the child was addedTo show stories in the right language and suggest themes first
Reading sessions — when, how long, how many wordsFor progress, streak and earned screen time
Streak, stars and favourite storiesTo show the child's progress
The parents' screen time settingsSo the rules still apply the next time the app is opened
Screen time you have granted — when and how many minutesSo the balance shows what is left, not everything ever earned
That the microphone question has been shownSo the app does not ask the same thing twice
Your answer about the microphone — yes or noSo the app knows whether it may listen, and so that you can change your mind (section 3)
Books added by a parentThe feature is not active in this version — no books are created

Legal basis: legitimate interests (art. 6(1)(f)). The data is precisely what the app needs in order to do what the family installed it for: let a child read and see their own progress. It does not leave the family's phone, it is not used for profiling, advertising or analytics, and it is not shared with anyone. No smaller amount of data would give the same function.

3. The microphone and Apple's speech recognition

When the child reads aloud, the app listens so that it can follow along in the text.

  • The audio may be sent to Apple and turned into text there. That is Apple's service, not ours.
  • Rimdal saves neither the audio nor the text. What is left after a reading session is numbers: how many words, how long, how far into the story.
  • The microphone is on during an ongoing reading session and is switched off when the app is left.

Legal basis: consent (art. 6(1)(a)), given by the guardian when the app is set up and withdrawable at any time in Parent Mode. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and the app works without it: the child can carry on reading without the microphone. Nothing is then sent to Apple.

What Apple does with the audio is Apple's processing, not ours. We cannot state how long Apple keeps it, because Apple publishes no retention period covering speech recognition inside other developers' apps. Apple's own description is here: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/data/en/ask-siri-dictation/

4. iCloud backup

If you have iCloud backup switched on for the phone, the data the app has saved is included in your own backup, exactly as it is for other apps. That is your own Apple service — Rimdal sends nothing there and has no access to it. You control it in the phone's settings.

5. What the app does not do

  • No advertising and no tracking.
  • No analytics and no statistics gathering — there are no third-party tools in the app.
  • No network traffic of its own. The app has no server, no account and no login. The one route by which data leaves the phone is the speech recognition in section 3.
  • No profiling and no automated decision-making.
  • The app does not use location, camera, contacts, calendar, photos or health data.
  • Data is not sold and not shared with anyone.

6. How long the data is kept

The data stays on the phone until it is removed. There are two ways to remove it, and both remove it for real — we hold no copy anywhere else, so there is nothing at our end to erase.

  • In the app: Parent Mode → Settings → Delete data. There you can remove one child (name, age, reading sessions, streak, stars and favourites for that one child) or everything the app has saved, after which the app starts again from the beginning.
  • By uninstalling the app, which removes everything at once.

7. Your rights

You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and data portability, and the right to withdraw a consent at any time.

How they are exercised here — and it looks different from an ordinary service, because the data sits with you and not with us:

RightWhat you do
See the dataThe child's data and reading history are shown in Parent Mode in the app
RectifyChange the child's name and age in Parent Mode (the button is called "Change child’s details")
EraseParent Mode → Settings → Delete data. Remove one child, or everything the app has saved. Uninstalling the app also removes everything
Withdraw consent to the microphoneParent Mode → Settings → switch off Allow the app to listen. Reading works without the microphone
Object to the processingContact us at the address in section 1

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY), https://www.imy.se.

8. For you who are a child

The app remembers what you have read, how many stars you have and how many days in a row you have read. It stays on the phone — we cannot see it.

When you read aloud, the app listens so that it knows where you are in the story. The audio may be sent to Apple, which turns it into text. We do not save the audio and we do not save the words you said.

If you do not want the app to listen, you can read anyway. Ask a grown-up and the two of you can switch the microphone off together.

9. Changes to this text

If the app changes, this text changes at the same time, and the date at the top is updated. If something material changes — for example which data is saved, or why — we say so in the app.

10. Where the text is published

This text is shown inside the app under Parent Mode → Settings, and is published at the address given on the app's App Store page.

The text on this page is generated from the same source file as the text inside the app, so the two cannot drift apart.
